With February a mere weekend away, we are almost ready to embark on a decathlon of gaming. There is a good chance that not everything releasing is for you, but with such a wide variety of games scheduled to drop, you’re bound to find something that tickles your fancy. The fact that the pre-show for February has been Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection (MC 87) and Pokémon Legends: Arceus (MC 86) really sets the stage for what should be an incredible year of gaming.
Instead of breaking down the full month and turning this into a novel, I have instead hand-selected a few of the releases I am most looking forwards to, so let’s start in order of release date.
Life is Strange Remastered Collection
February 1st
This is a controversial addition to the list, as while I did really enjoy both season one of Life is Strange and the Before the Storm side story that is remastered in this collection – I concede that it is one of the most pointless remasters in history. The games were released in 2015 and 2017 respectively, which by normal standards would make them eligible to be remastered in about 2035. However, while they look nearly identical to their original counterparts in the trailer, the promise of a solid 60fps is enticing, as the originals did chug along a little at times. Plus the story is superb, especially after some cringe-worthy dialogue in episode one.
Dying Light 2: Stay Human
February 4th
The wait for Dying Light 2: Stay Human has been a long one! Originally expected to release about two years ago, fans have had to be patient while developer Techland finished the project. The wait looks set to be worth it though, with the original being a surprise hit and one of the best zombie games of the last generation. Whether you spend 500, 200, 80 or 20 hours with Dying Light 2, it looks like it’ll be a thrill ride!
OlliOlli World
February 8th
This is the third game in the OlliOlli franchise. For those new to the series, it is a fast-paced and highly skill-based 2D skateboarding game where split-second timing is not only a useful advantage but a necessity. The new game comes with a 2.5D style and a brighter colour palette. It also brings with it the addition of wall rides, which along with the added depth opens up multiple routes in many of the game’s levels. This addictive arcade Indie will lure you in and not let you go easily!
Sifu
February 8th
Sifu likely needs no proper introduction, having been impressively shown off at various events over the last year. The beat ’em up action-adventure game is developed by Sloclap, whose previous work on Absolver gives fans every reason to expect Sifu to be something special. One of the key mechanics behind this new title is the unique ageing system, where each time you die you come back older, and with some upgrades, if enough XP has been earned.
CrossfireX
February 10th
CrossfireX hits Xbox Game Pass day one and is the third game in the series. I’ll be honest, even two months ago I had zero hype for this. However, the trailer at the game awards really piqued my interest. I had always thought of Crossfire as an online-focused game, but the cinematic single-player story really grabbed my attention. The fact that Remedy is involved just cements my optimism.
Horizon Forbidden West
February 18th
The sequel to one of my favourite games of the PlayStation 4 generation. Horizon Forbidden West doesn’t look like it is reinventing the wheel, which honestly sounds like a plus. Developer Guerrilla Games promises a bigger, more immersive world this time around and I absolutely can’t wait. The backstory from Zero Dawn is one of the best ever told in games and I am excited to see where they take it next.
Destiny 2: The Witch Queen
February 22nd
While Destiny 2 has never been something I have been overly interested in, there is no denying the incredible legs the title has had. Four and a half years after launch the communities appetite for more content has only grown and the new Witch Queen expansion looks like a great addition to an already generous package.
Elden Ring
February 25th
Souls games have never really appealed to me, with the level of difficulty being the main reason why. However, there is something about Elden Ring that has me interested. Maybe it is the writing influence of George R. R. Martin, or the fact that From Software are venturing a little bit out of their comfort zone with a more open setting. This is one of the most anticipated games of the year for a reason and one that everyone should watch closely.
