Stepping into the rain-slicked grounds of a turn-of-the-century estate as a conflicted young man of the cloth immediately sets a heavy, atmospheric tone. The Crimson Maid wastes little time establishing its Gothic romance roots: Marius returns home after years away training for the priesthood, summoned by news of his father’s declining health. What greets him is a frosty family, a house full of unspoken resentments, and a newly hired maid whose presence quietly unsettles both his vows and his carefully ordered view of the world. When a sudden death fractures the household, the narrative shifts into a mystery laced with questions of faith, desire, and buried secrets. The writing leans into melodrama at times, yet it mostly lands with conviction, keeping the central relationships tense and the revelations carefully measured. Multiple endings encourage a second look, and the story’s blend of the earthly and the uncanny feels cohesive rather than forced.

Gameplay stays deliberately restrained. You move through the manor and its grounds in first person, examining objects, listening to conversations, and following a short list of objectives that push the plot forward. Dialogue choices matter, particularly in your interactions with the enigmatic maid, and the game is content to let you linger. The occasional puzzles, like rearranging image tiles, following precise medical steps, or piecing together household clues break up the exploration without ever becoming the main attraction. They serve the story rather than compete with it. In some instances there is even an option to skip a puzzle if you are having difficulty with it. The pace is unhurried; anyone seeking constant action will feel the emptiness of certain rooms. Yet that same measured rhythm suits the material. The house itself becomes a character, and taking time to notice its details rewards patience.

Visually the game is at its strongest indoors. The developers clearly understand how light falls across polished wood, heavy drapery, and faded wallpaper. Rooms feel lived-in and oppressive in equal measure, each corner carefully dressed. Character models sit a notch below the environments, occasionally stiff or a little too smooth. Expressions can sometimes look mannequin-esque, but it never fully breaks the immersion. A fitting, slightly theatrical score and solid voice work further sell the period atmosphere.

The Crimson Maid is not a long experience, nor is it mechanically ambitious. Its strengths lie in mood, in the quiet friction between duty and longing, and in a mystery that unfolds at its own deliberate speed. For players willing to meet it on those terms, it delivers a focused, memorable 5ish hours that earn a recommendation from me.

Good Stuff Excellent visuals in places Intriguing story Fun puzzles
Bad Stuff Some strange facial animations Pacing issues
Summary
The Crimson Mask delivers a gripping story that while oddly paced at times, keeps you guessing. The interior visuals are a treat for the eyes and some welcome side puzzles help bridge the narrative beats. It's an easy recommendation.

Craig started gaming at 4 years old on the NES and has been hooked ever since. Trophies and achievements have only made him fall deeper down the rabbit hole. Will play almost anything, although particularly partial to anything involving stealth and silenced pistols. Football game enthusiast. RIP PES.
